British curriculum

British school teaching jobs in the Gulf

"British school" covers a wide range abroad. This page explains how to tell a genuinely British-curriculum school from one that borrows the label, and what those schools expect from you.

How to judge a British-curriculum school

Look for three things: the curriculum actually taught, the examination boards used at GCSE and A Level, and independent inspection or accreditation. Many strong schools in the region hold British Schools Overseas (BSO) inspection or membership of established international school associations.

Ask which examination boards the department uses and to see the last inspection report. A school confident in its provision will share both without hesitation.

  • English National Curriculum taught through to GCSE and A Level
  • Recognised examination boards, named openly
  • Independent inspection or accreditation you can read
  • UK-qualified teaching staff and UK-style safeguarding policy

Qualifications British and international schools look for

British-curriculum schools in the region recruit almost exclusively from the UK-qualified teacher pool. In practice that means a recognised teaching qualification and classroom experience gained in a school setting.

  • PGCE or PGDE, or an equivalent recognised initial teacher training route
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), or clear evidence of the route you are completing
  • Usually at least two years of post-qualification classroom experience
  • Recent, verifiable references covering your most recent school
  • An enhanced DBS certificate and a clean safeguarding record
  • Attested degree and qualification certificates for the visa process

Understanding a teaching package in a Gulf British-curriculum school

Packages are not directly comparable to a UK salary, because a large part of the value sits outside the monthly figure. Rather than quoting numbers we cannot evidence for every school, we set out what to compare so you can judge an offer properly.

Once recruitment opens, we will share the confirmed package details for each vacancy with you before you interview.

  • Monthly salary and whether local income tax applies
  • Accommodation: provided, an allowance, or neither
  • Flights: joining, annual and end-of-contract
  • Medical insurance, and whether dependants are covered
  • Tuition support for your own children, and how many places
  • End-of-service gratuity and contract length
  • Utilities, transport and any relocation allowance

Safer recruitment and safeguarding

Every candidate we put forward will be subject to safer-recruitment checks: identity, qualification verification, employment history, references and an enhanced DBS check. Reputable international schools apply the same standards as UK schools, and we will not put a candidate forward without them.

If a school asks for documents or fees that do not fit safer-recruitment practice, tell us. Legitimate schools in the Gulf do not charge teachers a placement fee.

How PIT Recruitment supports you

PIT Recruitment is being set up as a UK-based specialist consultancy. Once our services launch, you will deal with a named consultant who prepares you for the interview format each school actually uses, and reviews the contract wording with you before you sign.

There will never be a fee to a teacher. When recruitment opens, you will be able to create an account, upload your CV once and apply to published vacancies.
